Frederick was the eighth bishop of Utrecht. He became embroiled in a dispute between Emperor Louis the Pious and his sons. In 834, having just celebrated mass, he was murdered by adherents of the Emperor. It was not long before he was canonised. His bones lay buried for centuries in St Salvator's church in Utrecht. In 1362 the church was restored. St Frederick's grave was then solemnly opened. The head of the saint was separated from the torso.
